In the morning…

When the day starts early and mild, when you watch the daylight inch into a fully lit day, and the birds welcome the day with their song, then it is normal to reach out, say to the Lord “give ear to my words, O Lord…”

However your prayer begins, with groaning, crying, or sounds of joy, you can know deep in your very being that God hears!

There are things we encounter in our lives that remind us how dismal life can be for so many people. We see their reactions in so many ways, reactions that filter into our own lives. You can see how the stress of the chaos of the world impacts so many areas, big and small in all our daily lives.

Psalms is my go-to book in the Bible when my own prayers, my own thoughts, can’t seem to capture what lingers in my heart, and my mind. David had his enemies. He had his conflicts. And yet his choice was always to approach everything with prayer to His God.

The beginning of the following Psalm can seem harsh as he lists the characteristics of things and people he is dealing with. But in reality, don’t the words reflect the deep emotions any of us can deal with? What ministers to me is how he works through it all to ultimately turn away from himself to focus on God. To recognize the impact seperation from God has on people And then, to offer that sacrifice of praise.

I can find myself in the the verses of Psalms 5. The frustration. The anger. The complaining. The possible choices made that can ultimately lead to permanent seperation from God.

But I also see that point of submission and recognition that even those who seem against us still need to be prayed for, hoping that in the end, those who might be against us will take refuge in God and know the power of His love and forgiveness.

 Psalms 5

Give ear to my words, O LORD;
consider my groaning.
Give attention to the sound of my cry,
my King and my God,
for to you do I pray.
O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice;
in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.
For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
evil may not dwell with you.
The boastful shall not stand before your eyes;
you hate all evildoers.
You destroy those who speak lies;
the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.
But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
will enter your house.
I will bow down toward your holy temple
in the fear of you.
Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness
because of my enemies;
make your way straight before me.
For there is no truth in their mouth;
their inmost self is destruction;
their throat is an open grave;
they flatter with their tongue.
Make them bear their guilt, O God;
let them fall by their own counsels;
because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out,
for they have rebelled against you.
But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
let them ever sing for joy,
and spread your protection over them,
that those who love your name may exult in you.
For you bless the righteous, O LORD;
you cover him with favor as with a shield.
