A letter to us all

Sometimes my words just cannot touch what I see, hear, or feel about the world we live in. So, I’m posting a letter to us all from the Bible. I realize that some of these words will be read with modern cultural definitions and not the original definitions, as much directed by the culture of that time as anything else. Even so, at the very depth of who we are, the truth is there. And sometimes truth hurts, making growth and healing possible.

2 Timothy 3

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,  heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good,  treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,  having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.  For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions,  always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.  Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith.  But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.

You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me.  Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.  But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it  and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,  that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

The Word

Today is one of those days where the list of things to do before a virtual conference begins wants to stall me. Some of them are things I’m catching up on, and will have to be put aside again for awhile, but I wanted to at least share some of God’s Word this morning.

So many times when I’ve been troubled, a Psalm has been a soothing salve to my soul. When pressure to produce in limited time has battered me, I’ve learned to take the time to pause, find a Psalm to ease away the pressure, let the words envelop me, spend time thanking the Lord for His mercy, grace, and love, and then face whatever it is that presents the pressure.

Psalm 125 was my psalm for the morning as I prepare for my day. It speaks more than I ever could. I pray it ministers to you today as well.

Psalm 125 A song of ascents.

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
which cannot be shaken but endures forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the Lord surrounds his people
    both now and forevermore.

The scepter of the wicked will not remain
over the land allotted to the righteous,
for then the righteous might use
    their hands to do evil.

Lord, do good to those who are good,
to those who are upright in heart.
But those who turn to crooked ways
the Lord will banish with the evildoers.

Peace be on Israel.
